(FASTNEWS|COLOMBO) – The Disaster Managements Centre says the rising water levels of rivers have receded alongside reduced heavy rainfall reported across the island as of now.
Issuing a statement Deputy Director Pradeep Kodippili said the water levels of the Kelani river have entirely returned to normal whilst, the overflowing Kalu river has receded as well.
The landslide warnings issued by the National Building Research Organisation 7 districts in the island also remains in effect. Accordingly the warnings which issued for the Ratnapura, Nuwara-Eliya, Kegalle, Kandy, Galle and Matara districts, remain in effect until 2.30 this afternoon.
Authorities have also warned the public to remain vigilant of landslides, collapsing slopes, falling rocks and the ground caving in, if rainy conditions in the relevant districts continue.
The Disaster Management Centre yesterday urged the pubic to immediately evacuate from the Ratnapura, Alapatha, Kiriella and Ayagama Pradeshiya Sabha owing to rising water levels of the Kalu River, however noting the public who evacuated from affected areas must continue to remain in safe zones until warnings are lifted entirely.
Koddippli said several reports of landslides, fallen trees and debris, and road obstructions were reported from several districts across the island as well. (DMC)
