BIA to introduce special immigration counters

(FASTNEWS | COLOMBO) – The government has drawn attention towards establishing separate immigration and emigration counters at the Bandaranaike International Airport for expecting mothers and those with special needs.

The government has also directed attention towards implementing a programme within the BIA premises to provide guidelines for air passengers.

At present there are 19 immigration counters at the departure terminal at the BIA, and 25 immigration counters at the arrival terminal.

It has been decided to increase the number of immigration counters at the BIA and to appoint Immigration and Emigration Officers to each immigration counters, with the intention of providing immediate solutions to passengers facing visa related issues.

The Department of Government Information said the decision was reached during a discussion held between representatives of the Department of Immigration and Emigration, and airport and airline services.

The discussion was held based on directives issued by Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Prasanna Ranatunga.

During the discussion attention was also drawn towards providing solutions to minimize congestion at the BIA.
