‘Govt. engaged in efforts to improve the economy’

(FASTNEWS | COLOMBO) – United People’s Freedom Alliance Parliamentarian Sisira Jayakody says the government’s lack of a two thirds majority in Parliament, has not hampered its efforts in maintaining a government.

Speaking to a prominent online news portal, he has told that the government is carrying out a systematic program to improve the economy.

He however admitted that the prices of essential commodities have increased marginally and highlighted that at present they have limited stocks of rice.

However the MP claimed that if the government imports rice, it will affect domestic farmers, adding that the harvest season begins with the Thaipongal festival in January.

Therefore, he said the government will not import rice and will attempt to address the rice mafia in the country.

The MP said the government will continue the programme to provide the public all essential goods at a reasonable rate.

On a separate note MP Sisira Jayakody said the General Election will be worked off soon, claiming that within the next three months, Parliament can be dissolved.

During the month of October, he stated that a short term financial bill was passed to fund the government till March, and claimed that a budget was not passed.

He said when an election is announced and nominations are called, allocations can be made through the consolidated fund.

The Parliamentarian state that no financial bill will be defeated during this period.
