Report on Sri Lanka to be presented to the UNHRC

(FASTNEWS | COLOMBO) – United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet is expected to present a report on Sri Lanka to the Human Rights Council today.

Following the formal presentation of the human rights report, member nations will then express their stance on the matter.

Minister Gunawardena will also respond to the Oral Update on Sri Lanka by the High Commissioner.

He is also scheduled to meet the High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet tomorrow.

During his stay in Geneva, Minister Gunawardena will also meet with the Director Generals of the United Nations Office in Geneva, the International Labour Organisation, the International Organisation for Migration and the Secretary- General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

The Minister of Foreign Relations yesterday formally informed the UNHRC that Sri Lanka was withdrawing from co-sponsoring Resolution 40/1 of March 2019 on ‘Promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka.’

Addressing the 43rd Session of the UNHRC in Geneva Minister Gunawardena said despite the withdrawal from the process of co-sponsoring the resolutions, the government remains committed to achieving the goals set by the Sri Lankan public on reconciliation and sustainable peace.
