“No sanctions for SL despite resolution withdrawal” – Sarath Amunugama

(FASTNEWS | COLOMBO) – United People’s Freedom Alliance Parliamentarian Sarath Amunugama says Sri Lanka’s decision to withdraw from co-sponsoring two United Nations Human Rights Council resolutions will not result in sanctions being imposed on the country.

Speaking to media the MP said the matter must be handled diplomatically in order to ensure that the trade sector is not affected.

He said the government has informed the UNHRC of the decision to withdraw from co-sponsoring the 30/1 resolution.

He noted now as Sri Lanka is backing out of co-sponsoring the resolution, the country must ensure it operates carefully in foreign markets.

The MP said the world’s economy is changing rapidly, adding Brexit occured recently and US President Trump had presented new economic policies.

Amunugama claimed Sri Lanka would not have as many sanctions imposed, further remarking if the issue is handled well diplomatically, Sri Lanka can move forward without any issues.
