PHI Union suspends planned union action

(FASTNEWS | COLOMBO) –  The Public Health Inspectors Union says they have temporarily suspended the 14-day trade union action that was due to commence today.

Chairman of the Union Upul Rohana said the decision was reached after three of the main concerns they put forth pertaining to the COVID-19 prevention programme were met.

He explained the trade union action was planned, as public health officials were not given basic health and safety equipment, transport facilities and were not allocated the required legal provisions in the quarantine ordinance.

However Rohana said many areas in the country were provided with health and safety equipment today which was satisfactory, adding required transport would also be provided.

However he noted there are legal provisions on the Quarantine ordinance that are yet to be drafted, further remarking the Union has accordingly directed the claims to the Secretary of the Ministry of Health.

The Chairman expressed hope that the matter would be addressed within 14-days.
