PS5 teardown confirms removable panels
(FASTNEWS | COLOMBO) – Sony PlayStation has released a seven minute ‘teardown’ video of the PS5, showcasing the disc edition of the console and how it all comes together.
The video answers the biggest question many have been asking since the design premiered – are the two white panels on either side replaceable with ones of another color?
The video confirms they very much are and no tools are required. Both sides of the console come off by simply gripping it and sliding it off. This means we can probably expect a booming industry of custom paint jobs and alternate colored versions to pop up online soon after release.
The console boasts three SuperSpeed USB Type-A ports and one USB Type-C port, all capable of 10Gbps, along with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. There’s also a LAN port, HDMI Out and power port, a 350W power supply, and an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive with two layers of insulators to minimise drive noise and vibration. The console also has holes for the dust catcher that can be vacuumed to clear them out.
When stood vertically, a screw holds the console onto the base. When horizontal, the screw gets tucked away in a special compartment within the base that closes and locks when the base is set to the horizontal mounting position. Markers on the console indicate where the base should be placed when laying horizontal.
For future storage expansion, an M.2 interface with PCIe 4.0 support is installed. The console comes with a 120mm and 45mm thick double-sided air intake fan which sucks air in from the front and pushes it out through the rear.
The console boasts an SoC with an 8 core/16 thread AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU running up to 3.5Ghz and an AMD RDNA 2-based GPU at 2.23Ghz and 10.3 TFLOPS. There’s also 16Gb GDDR6 RAM @448Gb/s, 825Gb SSD with a custom SSD controller with 5.5Gb/s raw read speed.
Due to the very high thermal density of the silicon die, the system uses liquid metal as the thermal conductor between the chip and the heatsink. They spent two years developing the technique and mechanism to make it work . The heat sink is massive, using a heat pipe and specific shape to achieve what they claim is the same performance as a vapor chamber.
