MoviePass teases potential resurrection
(FASTNEWS | COLOMBO) – On Tuesday, a website for defunct movie ticketing subscription service MoviePass was rebranded to include a countdown clock ending this coming Monday, March 22nd.
The clock also includes the tagline “the movie is about to start.” This has led to speculation that the service may be resurrected in some new form at its new home URL of www.moviepass.ventures.
Mitch Lowe, the former CEO of MoviePass, was asked by Variety what it means to which he responded: “I have no idea. It has nothing to do with me.”
Reps for MoviePass did not respond, while reps for former MoviePass chairman Ted Farnsworth say he is not connected to the project. Exhibition industry sources also say they have no knowledge of what’s going on.
The service launched in 2017 and offered customers the option to see one movie per day for $9.99 a month. Though popular, the deal was economically ruinous and MoviePass’ owner Helios and Matheson Analytics filed for bankruptcy after running out of cash.
Mark Wahlberg is currently executive producing a new docu-series about the company’s rise and fall.
