20th Amendment Draft legislation due Friday

In a special Cabinet session today (09), it was decided to draft legislation to put in motion electoral reforms in the form of the 20th amendment.

The Elections commissioner and the legal Draftsman were also present at this meeting and were advised to finish the draft of the new legislation by Friday (12).

The 20th amendment was being held back in regard to indecision to increase number of MP’s to 255 from current 225 as per the request of the United National Party. However it has been agreed to keep the number of seats in Parliament at the current 225.

Under the new system 125 MP’s will be selected from the Constituencies, 75 from the Proportional Representation system and the remaining 25 from the National List.
