Former economic development minister Basil Rajapaksa was summoned to the FCID yesterday (07) to record a statement, followed by it, he was arrested and produced before the Pugoda magistrate, who has granted bail to him.
He was arrested in connection with the construction of a luxury house on a 16-acre plot of land at Malwana using state funds. Based on a statement given by architect Muditha Jayakody, who designed and built the house, led to Basil’s arrest.
The FCID has revealed how Basil and Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had got Jayakody to build their houses free of charge and in return, given him government construction contracts without calling for tenders.
Jayakody also has built four beach chalets at Browns Hill in Matara for the younger sister of Basil’s wife.
