A Fundamental Rights petition was filed by President’s Counsel Prasanna Lal de Alwis.
The petition cited 27 respondents including the Tamil National Alliance and the Bodu Bala Sena Organisation.
The petition claimed the existence of religious and ethnic based parties have disrupted the reconciliation process in the country.
Accordingly, the petitioner had requested the Supreme Court to issue an order banning such political parties.
The Supreme Court rejected this petition calling for the ban of political parties that have registered based on ethnicity and religion.
The Attorneys representing the TNA and the Elections Commission have objected the petition calling for a ban and said that the Supreme Court has no authority to issue such an order.
The Supreme Court, after considering the preliminary submissions by the respondents, rejected the petition due to the petitioner’s failure to present a petition with a reasonable legal basis.
