President, Maithripala Sirisena had on several occasions stressed the importance of revising the levy on tobacco related products. Due to Opposition made by various faction the cabinet paper in this regard was delayed.
However, the proposal to increase tax on tobacco related products from 72 to 90% will be presented to the Cabinet of Ministers by Minister of Health Rajitha Senaratne today.
Minister of Special Assignments Sarath Amunugama said the government will expedite the process and implement the tax revision promptly.
