Restructuring Transportation Industry Soon – Nimal Siripala

Minister of Transport Nimal Siripala De Silva said,  that following the appointment of the new government several measures have been taken to increase the standard of the transport industry in the country.
In this connection a  committee has been appointed to study recommend ways and means of improving  the transport industry on par with international standards.
Speaking during the adjournment debate in Parliament, Transport Minister De Silva said,   that the government will overhaul the private and public bus transportation system in the country and new regulations will be introduced  to streamline the industry. The proposed regulations will be implemented following Cabinet approval under several phases.
Meanwhile, JVP Parliamentarian Bimal Ratnayake urged the government to address problems faced by passengers in  long distance busses and in the   semi-luxury busses. He said the operators have disregarded several regulations including seating arrangements adding passengers have been charged additionally for substandard services.
Minister  in response said,  that the government cannot remove all buses from services at present however noted that measures have been taken to introduce the new system.
