Travel Card System For Bus Travel – Ravi

Minister Ravi Karunanayake  said,  that the travel card system will be implemented for public transport services in a majority of Provinces  with effect from 1 April 2017.
Lanka Private Bus Owners Association (LPBOA) President Gemunu Wijeratne also  said, that prepaid card system for private buses was implemented on certain bus routes in the Western and Central Provinces and it will be implemented in other provinces in early 2017.
He claimed that the government was also of the view that the prepaid card system should be implemented and the National Transport Commission (NTC) was working on it.
The proposed prepaid card system is to be implemented together with the Information Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA). It was proposed that Rs 100 each, will be credited to the accounts of the bus driver and conductor every day, which would provide them with a pension. The implementation of prepaid card system for buses has been lagging for years. Although it was implemented in the Western Province two years ago, the project did not meet with much success.
