In reply to questions raised by journalists about the decision taken by MP Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera to opt for independent status in Parliament and his vow to create a pressure group, Cabinet Spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said , Rathana Thera spends quite a bit of time outside of Colombo, he is not aware of the latest developments that take place. He further said, that he would also like to support him with constructive criticism of the Government.
Senaratne acknowledged that, there are mistakes and we have been slow in delivering some of our promises. But there is also a lot of freedom. The Thera can now come out and openly say what and how he feels. Could he have done this during the Rajapaksa regime?” Senaratne asked.
Most of the issues the Thera has raised have been solved at Cabinet level but because he is outside of Colombo he is not aware of these facts” he said.
Senaratne added that since the Government comprises the United National Party (UNP) and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) a lot of discussions take place before a decision is taken.”
