The Ministry of Fisheries has stated that discussions are in progress in order to secure the release of Sri Lankan fishermen who are currently under Indian custody.
The Secretary to the Ministry, Nimal Hettiarachchi has stated that as to whether Sri Lanka does not take into custody any Indian fishermen who breach our maritime boundary, the secretary said that the Sri Lankan Navy does soon a regular basis.
Adding further, he said that similarly, when Sri Lankan fishermen breach the Indian maritime boundary, they are taken into custody of Indian authorities.
Meanwhile, fishermen in the Baththalan – Gunduwa area have charged that the Indian fishermen who come to that area are not being arrested.
