Coal in considered as the cheapest energy source costing less than Rs.6 to generate a kilowatt / hour. It takes a minimum of 10 years to build a coal power plant.
Uncertainty prevails for many years regarding Srilanka’s coal power plant in Sampur, which was expected to be commissioned by 2020, adding 500 Mw to the National Grid. There is uncertainty about Sampur coal project.
In 2015, electricity generation rose by 5.9%, while provisional data showed in 2016 growth has accelerated to 11.2%. During the 1st two months in 2017 electricity generation has grown by an even higher rate of 12%.
In a recently held seminar that discussed the emerging challenges in power sector in Srilanka, energy consultant Dr. Thilak Siyambalapitiya said, the public can await an electricity price increase soon.
