Fast News has already reported that 50 MEP’s representing the European Parliament has submitted a proposal stating that Sri Lanka has not taken necessary steps to annul the Prevention of Terrorism Act, and has failed to prosecute those charged with alleged human rights abuses.The proposal also cites the report on Sri Lanka submitted by the United Nations Human Rights Council.
On the other hand Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Harsha De Silva, currently on an official visit in Belgium, said Sri Lanka is confident of obtaining victory over the objection, by securing the support of several members of the European Parliament.
The debate and voting process on the proposal submitted at the European Union against Sri Lanka’s eligibility to be granted the Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus or GSP+ trade concession is scheduled to the debate is scheduled to commence today.
