While the Tamil Nation Alliance (TNA) MP M. A. Sumanthiran urged the Government to go for a referendum in respect of the new constitution, so that the people could voice their opinion, National Council Chairman Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera said, the people didn’t give mandate to this Government for constitutional reforms, that would necessitate a referendum. He displayed the President Maithripala Sirisena’s election manefestic and referred to the part, where it was stated that he would never permit a constitutional reforms resulting in a referendum. The Thera said, that most countries which opted to constitutional reforms ended up in a tragedy and warned the Government against acting according to the cheap political agenda of the few groups.
