Bandaranayake Predicted a War – Punjasara Thera

Srilankan Monks are the obstacle then and now to resolve minority ethnic problem in Srilanka said ,Sathkorala Mahadisave Deputy Chief Sanghanayaka Shastrapathi Magalkadawala Punjasara Thera during an interview given to a National Daily. When Bandaranayake attempted to resolve the minority ethnic problem and entered into an agreement with Tamil leader S.J.V.Chelvanayagamin the years 1956, 1957, Monks went and rounded up Rosmead Place, where Bandaranayke resided and forced him to tear the agreement. Monks were responsible to tear Bandaranayake –Chelvanayagam agreement. What Bandaranayke said then was “today I am tearing this agreement but in future this may lead to a war”. Monks who were responsible to bring him to power forced him to tear the agreement he entered with Chelvanayagam. When Dudly Senanayake was the Prime Minister, he entered into an agreement with Chelvanayagam in the years 1965,1966. Monks were responsible to tear those agreements too. Throughout the history, Monks interfered in this ethnic issue in an uncivilized manner.
During J.R.Jeyawardena’s period, he brought Development Council and Village Council, which were non functional. Because of these above reasons, 30 year old war was born. Although we were able to end the war, wounds created by the war remain unhealed. It is the duty of the good governance to heal the wounds. This government is preparing the draft of a new constitution. Mahanayake Theras of the three Nikkayas registered their protest against it. This reminds us the history (history repeats). Today monks remain in the same place. It is very wrong to be on the same place. Responsible religious leaders of this country should look at options to resolve problems of the country in a peaceful manner, he concluded.
