Participating in the same debate Opposition Leader and Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader R. Sampanthan responded stating , that the the government cannot be toppled by disrupting the essential services. He justified the action taken by the President and said, that smooth distribution of fuel to the people is essential. But the Joint Opposition is attempting to disrupt it. That is the reason why the President declared the distribution of fuel as an essential service. Further, he said that the trade unions are essential to safeguard the rights of workers in a democratic country, but they should not misuse their power and cripple the essential services of a country. No one can topple the government other than using the vote in a democratic country.
