Investigations into 18 complaints filed at the Presidential Commission of Inquiry to Investigate and Inquire into Serious Acts of Fraud, Corruption and Abuse of Power, State Resources and Privileges have been completed, of which 17 reports have been handed over to the President.
Meanwhile, 117 investigations launched by the Commission have been handed over to the Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division, the Criminal Investigations Department and the Bribery Commission for further inquiries.
Investigations into 2 complaints reported to have not been completed. Investigations into irregularities reported at SriLankan Airlines regarding a water supply project during the tenure of the previous United People’s Freedom Alliance led government, is one of the investigations yet to be completed.
Hence, the Presidential Commission has requested President Maithripala Sirisena to extend its tenure by a further 6 months.
If the tenure is not extended the remaining two investigations cannot be completed. The time frame set for the Commission to complete its investigations comes to an end on the 3rd of September.
