SC Concluded Evidence Hearing of Geetha’s Petition

The Supreme Court yesterday concluded evidence hearing of the petition filed by United People’s Freedom Alliance Galle District MP Geetha Kumarasinghe, challenging the decision pronounced by the Court of Appeal on her parliamentary post.
The Appeals Court in May ruled that MP Geetha Kumarasinghe cannot hold a Parliamentary post as she holds dual citizenship and was against the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. However, MP Kumarasinghe filed a petition at the Supreme Court, challenging the verdict of the lower court.
During yesterday’s hearing, the 5 member panel of Judges headed by the Chief Justice ordered that the proclamation of the verdict on the case be postponed indefinitely.
The Supreme Court has also directed the Attorney General to submit written submissions pertaining to the petition if any, before the 10th of October.
