The Sri Lanka Army says it plans to embark on an ambitious project to reforest the Fox Hill (Nariya Kanda) mountain range in Diyatalawa to recover its ecological system damaged by the annual motor racing.
The well-known mountain range in the upcountry popularly known as Fox Hill draws thousands of eager motor racing enthusiasts and holiday goers annually to the “Fox Hill super cross race” and other public events.
As a result the green environment of the mountain range has suffered and the ecological system has witnessed a negative impact over the years.
Under the first phase of the project troops under the Security Force Headquarters – Central (SFHQ-C) will plant 1,000 indigenous and fruit plants. Initially reforestation will be carried out in a 3.75 acre plot identified as a worst affected area.
The green project will get off the ground with the support of state agencies, school children and tri-service personnel with the launching of ‘Foxhill Green walk’ from the town center to the ‘Fox Hill’ mountain range on Friday July 24th.
