Twelve Thousand people affected by bad weather

(FASTNEWS | COLOMBO) – A total of 12,289 persons from nine districts have been affected by heavy rains and gusty winds experienced in the country during the past few days.

Three persons have died while four others are missing in weather-related incidents as well.

The Disaster Management Centre in its latest situation report confirmed 2,374 persons have been relocated to 15 temporary shelters.

The DMC added 326 houses that have been partially damaged owning to the inclement weather across the country.

Ratnapura has been the worst hit district where 6,865 persons have been affected. 216 houses in the district have also been damaged.

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology says the showery and windy conditions are expected to continue in the western and southern sea areas and in the southwest quarter of the island due to the active Southwest Monsoon.

The Met Department predicts showers or thundershowers in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and North-Western provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.

Heavy rain falls about 100 mm can be expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa province and in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.

It added, several spells of showers may occur in the Northern and North -Central provinces as well.

Meanwhile, strong winds about 50 kmph can be expected at times along the western slopes of the Central hills and in the North-central, Western, North-western and Southern provinces.
