Nearly 4,900 families still affected by bad weather -DMC

(FASTNEWS | COLOMBO) – A total of 4,900 families are still affected by the inclement weather experienced in several parts of the country in the past few days.

The Disaster Management said in its latest update said 19,845 individuals have been affected by adverse weather in 11 districts.

Three deaths and injuries to two individuals are also linked to inclement weather.

Meanwhile, the DMC said eight houses have been destroyed and 329 residences have been damaged due to heavy rains, gusty winds and landslides.

Around 143 families affected by bad weather have also been relocated to temporary shelters at present.

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology says a slight enhancement of rainy conditions can be expected today and tomorrow compared to yesterday.

The Met Department accordingly predicted showers or thundershowers at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western and Northern provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.

Heavy showers about 100mm can also be expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-Western provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.

It added showers or thundershowers will occur elsewhere over the island during the afternoon or night.

The Met Department noted that strong winds about 40-45kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the Central hills and in the Southern province.

The general public has been requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
