During the last regime, people living in Rathupaswela areas of Gampaha complained that their water resources were contaminated with chemicals dumped into the drain. They reported this matter to authorities concerned. But no action was taken. Finally they were compelled to come to the street and stage a protest campaign. Then Government in power sent armed forces instead of police to disperse the demonstrators. In the melee one of the demonstrators was shot dead by the army. Their were wide spread condemnation by civil organizations and public spirited citizens. Subsequently,citizens formed a water protection society and fought against this in various forums including the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court Directed the Central Environmental Authority to submit a report on water samples collected from Rathupaswela. Petitioners alleged that the report of the Central Environmental Authority clearly states chemical contents found in Rathupaswela water samples is not in accordance with the standards.
After hearing the case today, in the Supreme Court, it was deferred to 28th April 2016 for further hearing.
