Yositha Rajapakse, is in remand prison on charges of money laundering along with his accomplices. While Yositha Rajapaksa was returning to his ward after seeing visitors, his modern mobile phone slipped from his pocket. This incident has leaked to the press. On seeing this news item, Minister of Prison and Reform, D.M.Swaminathan ordered prison authorities to investigate this matter and report within two days.
According to prison regulations prisoners are not allowed to possess or use a mobile phone while in prison.
This is not a new phenomenon in Srilanka Prison history. Rich and influential people continue to possess and use one or mobile phones, while serving prison sentence. Once in a way prison authorities check and detect mobile phones from less influential people and make a cue and cry .
For instance former minister Johnston Fernando while in remand prison in H Ward, he openly displayed and used his mobile phone, specially during Sunday Mass in Prison.
Prison rules and regulations are strictly implemented by prison authorities only in respect of poor and less privileged people.
