First Financial Irregularity of the Govt. Exposed by Accounting Professionals

In obtaining a building on rent for Rehabilitation , Prison Reform and Resettlement  Ministry. Serious financial irregularity has  been caused, alleged Anton Perea , Secretary of Srilankan Accountants Service Union in a press conference called yesterday.

Before 8th January 2015, serious financial irregularities took place. But we continue to receive certain financial irregularities of the present government too. One such financial irregularity  reported is in respect of obtaining a building for the Ministry of Rehabilitation , Prison and Resettlement. Top political Official of  the Ministry wants it to be given according to his wish. They didn’t call tenders , select and offer. Valuer valued the selected building at Rs3 million, but the Ministry Secretary required, that this value should be adjusted according to the market value. Accordingly, after three weeks valuer revised  his valuation  to Rs 4.2 million. Subject Minister as well as the Secretary said, that  6 months rent amounting to Rs 30.98 million  should be paid. Chief Accountant  said  that this cannot be paid  and the next accountant said, that he too cannot  certify this payment. As they refused to make this irregular illegal payment, two Administrative officers and two Accountants were transferred out of the Ministry.

The Secretary of the Srilanka Accountants Service Union said  that  the President and the Prime Minister assured the Public that they won’t allow any financial irregularities under their administration. If what they assured the Public  is correct, call the Minister and the Secretary concerned and find out the circumstances under, which those two administrative and other two Accountants were transferred out. He appealed to them to order for an inquiry regarding this financial irregularity.
