The Ministry of Disaster Management said around 4,000 people succumb as a result of road accidents, drownings and lightning strikes.
This figure is believed to be more than the death toll reported during a year during the period of the conflict with the LTTE.
Deputy Minister of Disaster Management Dunesh Gankanda speaking at a media briefing yesterday said a survey will be conducted to determine areas in which a majority of accidents are reported and subsequently take steps to bring to book those violating road rules in such areas.
New technology has also been proposed in order to take action against individuals violating road regulations.
The Disaster Management Centre said it intends on reducing the number of accidents by 50% in 2017
The Ministry of Disaster Management has decided to launch a programme to minimize road accidents by considering road accidents a national disaster.
