FCID to be Replaced with Financial & Economic Investigation Agency

The Financial Crime Investigation Department (FCID) was established in a harry by the ‘Yahapaalana’ government to investigate corruption in the Rajapaksa regime. One of the popular news website reported that it will be abolished soon, quoting FCID sources.

The decision follows a request made to the president by SLFP seniors led by minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, and the prime minister has given his consent to the decision, reports said.

In place of FCID, the government has decided to establish another agency under a new name through a parliamentary act. This new body will be called the Financial & Economic Investigation Agency. Its head will be the incumbent chief of the FCID, senior DIG Ravindra   Vidyalankara, report said.

What will happen to ongoing investigations and inquiries are not made clear. An optimist will look at this attempt as an act of giving more legal powers to current FCID. But a pessimist will look at this as an attempt to safeguard culprits cum those who had plundered the wealth of Srilanka. An average citizen will think that the good governance is trying to hoodwink them in bringing the culprits to book.
