The Ministry of Health has cited the inclusion of the cadmium chemical in food items as a main reason for the cause of the kidney diseases.
The Director of the Environmental Health Occupational Health and Food Safety Unit Dr. Ananda Jayalal made this statement in response to a joint investigative report by Sri Lanka and China that stated Glyphosate was not a reason behind the cause of kidney related illnesses.
However investigations prior have highlighted that a number of food items contain poisonous chemicals due to the use of pesticides and weedicides during farming.
He said the consumption of potatoes grown inland will also help control its spread.
