Cadres petition razing of terrorist leaders statue

Cadres from the Hindu Makkal Katchi and the Periyar Dravida Kazhagam protested the statue of LTTE leader Prabhakaran being razed from a temple near Nagapattinam in Tamilnadu.

The Cadre from the Hindu Makkal Katchi submitted a petition to the Collector in Nagapattinam on Monday.

15 members of the Periyar Dravida Kazhagam were arrested by Police for not obtaining prior permission for demonstration.

According to the petitioner J. Swaminathan, a regional organiser of the Hindu Makkal Katchi, accused the Velankannai police of forcibly removing the statue of Prabhakaran from the Sevugaraya Ayyanar temple in South Poigainallur village early on Saturday.

He further stated that the Police attempted forcibly obtain a statement from villagers that they themselves removed the statue.

The petitioners state that it is a practice of the Hindu people to celebrate exceptional people by raising their statues in places of worship and such acts by authorities are seen as deliberate acts against their faith.
