Inmates in remand prions due for release should immediately be released by courts stated the Solicitor General Suhadha Gamlath.
He further advised the Prisons commissioner General to forward all details regarding the inmates in question including reasons for arrests to him by tomorrow (10).
He also stated that after he is presented with the report he will implement a committee to visit the prisons once a month and make sure the proceedings go forward as planned.
This committee will include officers from the Committee of the Legal Aid Commission, recently chartered lawyers, the Prisons Commissioner General and the chief Justice.
The idea of this committee is to visit Prisons and decide on the spot inmates who should be set free and those who should receive bail and proceed to do so through a motion presented to Court.
Under the Prisons Court ordinance the committee will be obliged to visit the Prison in their respective Province.
