Revival of Defunct Chemical Factory at a cost of Rs 525 Million-Industrious Rishad

Paranthan Chemical Factory was  originaly established in 1954 as Government Chemicals Factory at Paranthan in Kilinochchi district. It manufactured caustic soda using salt as the key raw material. This was relaunched under the new name of Paranthan Chemicals Corporation under State industrial Corporation Act No: 49 of 1957.

Paranthan Chemicals Factory , which was on 217 acres landscape was destroyed in the year 1985. Minister Rishad Bathiudeen made an inspection visit to this defunct factory on 24th April 2016, where he announced that the Chemicals Factory in Kilinochchi will be revived at a cost of Rs525 million and construction work would commence before the end of the year  2016. Now we import chlorine at an approximate cost of Rs 900.000 per year. Once the factory is revived and made operational, we can produce and provide our chlorine requirement and save foreign exchange, he said.

Once, Paranthan factory recommenced operation required salt could be obtained from Elephant Pass Saltern. In order to achieve self sufficient  in domestic and industrial salt supply, we have planned to upgrade Elephant Pass Saltern, he concluded.
