The United States government said it will provide an additional 36 million rupees to support flood relief efforts in the island.
The US Embassy in Colombo in a release said in addition to the previously announced 7.2 million rupees to support humanitarian assistance activities in the worst affected areas. A three-year program of approximately 144 million rupees designed to provide safe, disaster-resilient, drinking water to populations who are highly vulnerable to flooding and droughts.
Total near-term relief announced by the US Government stands at approximately 187 million rupees.
The US Government will continue efforts to provide long-term support and capacity building by working with the Lankan government to improve its disaster management system and assisting, through the United Nations, the Disaster Management Centre for improved humanitarian information management and coordination.
The Embassy said,it is monitoring the situation and will continue to work with the government and disaster relief authorities to identify further needs.
