FR Petition Challenging The National Government Today

The petition was filed by former Member of Parliament Sarath Weerasekara and Professor Wimaladharma Abeywickrama. The petition states that the formation of the national government and the appointment of the ministers are in violation of the country’s Constitution.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Cabinet Ministers, State Ministers, Deputy Minister and Members of Parliament have been named as respondents. The petition states, according to the country’s Constitution, the formation of a national government can only be made by the party with a majority of members by forming an alliance with all other parties representing Parliament.
The Fundamental Rights petition filed against the formation of the national government will be taken up for hearing at the Supreme Court today.
However, the petition filed by the former MP said the present administration cannot be determined as a national government. The petition has challenged the appointment of more than 30 Ministers to the Cabinet.
