Minister of Power and Energy Patalee Champika Ranawaka stated that a new Electricity payment scheme will be introduced from October onwards. He further stated that from then onwards the target of the Electricity board will be to ensure that every household and reach of the Country will have electricity.
The Minister made this statement at a meeting in Borella yesterday (14).
Further elaborating the Minister stated that previously the goal of the electricity board was to ensure a 24 hour electricity service. Considering power cuts have become a thing of the past we feel that benchmark is achieved and now the matter at hand is to expand our coverage across to all parts of the country.
Champika further explained “Through the “Uthuru Janani” power plant we are now able to give a Unit that the previous government gave for 30 rupees from Diesel Power plants at 17 rupees. “
He also mentioned the needless cost in excess of 3600 million annually will be replaced with more efficient modes of power such as coal for example. The Minister stated that the natural gas resources in the Mannar coast will be utilized to power the needs country.
