Elections Commission Predicts 2 Party System With Electoral Reforms

Chairman of the , Mahinda Deshapriya said special attention will be paid to the distribution of the enumeration form in the Colombo District today (21).
Deshapriya said the distribution of the forms in the island was completed except for several districts including Colombo.
The Chairman of the Elections Commission urged the public to take necessary measures to fill and submit the enumeration form before the 15th of July.
He said the distribution of enumeration forms have concluded across the country at present, except for several areas in Colombo, Gampaha including the Kelani River Valley, Aranayake, Bulathkohupitiya and Yatiyanthota in the Kegalle district and Nawalapitiya.
Deshapriya urged the public to inquire their respective Grama Niladhari Officer if they have not received an enumeration form thus far.
If completed forms cannot be submitted by the July 15th deadline the public can inquire the Grama Niladhari officer while residents of Colombo can inquire officials at the Elections Secretariat.
Meanwhile Chairman of the Elections Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya said minority political parties will be sidelined through the adoption of the proposed electoral system adding Sri Lanka could experience a two party political system in the future.
Deshapriya also noted that he believed the reforms would be unjust for certain political parties.
He added that when analysing the new system on a surface level, parties who are incapable of obtaining more votes will face difficulty in being elected as the proportional representation is lower.
Mahinda Deshapriya while noting that there are certain facts that he cannot state directly while the number of parties elected will be lower as the new system lowers the proportions.
He added these factors can only be changed by the legislative.
