TAX Amendments to Provide Relief to People Soon – President
The government increased the VAT from 11 to 15 percent from May 2 this year.
The government is facing a serous backlash from traders across the country over the increase of the VAT. Shops were closed across a number of towns in protest yesterday (29). Joint Opposition BAndula Gunawardana stated that retail traders were compelled to close down their business due to increase in TAX . But Cabinet Spokesman, Gayantha Karunathilake dismissed this claim as baseless.
In the meantime, the President Maithripala Sirisena while addressing a meeting at Hirandurukotte said yesterday, that he is well aware of difficulties faced by the people due to changes made in TAX including VAT. He has promised that amendments to current TAXES will be introduced on next Monday.
