Sacred Relics to be Placed by President at Moragahakanda Project

The Moragahakanda – Kalu Ganga Irrigation project, the biggest multi-functional irrigation project, currently undergoing constructions, was inaugurated in January 2007.
Project involves the construction of the Moragahakanda Dam and Reservoir, along with the separate Kalu Ganga Dam and Reservoir, for irrigation and power generation purposes.
When completed the project is expected to provide irrigation facilities to 81,422 hectares in the dry zone of Sri Lanka, provide portable and industrial water supply to Anuradhapura and Trincomalee and generate electricity by hydro power while opening up 5,000 hectares of new land for agriculture development in Northern, North Central, Eastern and North Western provinces. The Project will generate 25MW hydro power to the nation grid. The total development cost for both sites totals to approximately Rs 48,145 billion.
The sacred  relics placing ceremony  is organized by the Chief Minister of the North Central Province Peshala Jayaratne, under the patronage of the President and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
President Maithripala Sirisena will today deposit treasure items or nidhan wasthu in the main dam of the Moragahakanda – Kalu Ganga reservoir project.
