Minister of Education AkilaViraj Kariyawasam said, the all Island School Athletic meet start on today.
He said that, 18,089 children from 521 schools will compete in 27 events representing the nine provinces.
Most of the school children are victims of non communicable diseases. 20.6 are thin while 7.9 are short. 2.4% are obese while another 30% are having nutrition deficiencies. Therefore Minister wants the children to engage in games to be healthy individuals, he said.
