President, Maithripala Sirisena will leave for Venezuela today to attend the 17th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement.
The Heads of State session of the NAM is scheduled to commence tomorrow and President Sirisena is due to address the summit tomorrow.
The NAM commenced on the 13th of September in Venezuela under the theme “Peace, Sovereignty and Solidarity for Development”.
The Summit is expected to deliberate on issues such as current political developments, UN reform, terrorism, threats to international peace & security, UN peacekeeping, sustainable development, climate change, socio-economic development, south-south cooperation, refugees and migrants, and disarmament.
A delegation led by Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe is also attending the NAM.
Subsequent to attending the NAM, President Sirisena is due to leave for New York to attend the 71st General Assembly of the United Nations scheduled to commence on the 21st September 2016.
