Chinese Woman Arrested with Gems Valued Rs.1.1 Million

An attempt  by a   30-year-old Chinese woman to smuggle Rs 1.1 Million  worth of gems in her possession  had been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).   She was trying to smuggle out uncut gems to Hong Kong last night, Airport Deputy Customs Director,  Parakrama Basnayake said.
 He said the suspect was arrested at 10.50 p. m yesterday following a tip off to the Customs officers. The gems were valued at Rs.1.1 million and the officers found them concealed in her baggage, with equipment that used to identify gems
The suspect was a frequent traveller to Sri Lanka from Hong Kong via Malaysia.” he said. The haul of gems was confiscated. According to the Customs investigations, the suspect used to make jewellery items after polishing these gems in Hong Kong. The Customs inquiry was conducted by the Deputy Customs Director Sath Kumara.
