Plantation companies and estate trade unions will have another discussion with the labour Minister W. D. J. Seneviradna on Thursday, 13th October 2016 to agree on a wage formula for estate workers , who are demanding a daily wage of Rs 1000 against Rs 730 proposed by plantation companies.
There were differences of the opinion on the number of days they have to work.
MP Muththusivalingam said the country’s laws clearly state that the estate workers should be given 6 days of work or other wise they should be paid for it. It has been mentioned in the collective agreement for the past 32 years. He further said, there are attempts to change these clauses. If there is a need for a change, it should be thoroughly discussed and consensus arrived by all concerned.
However, estate workers keep on demonstrating demanding a daily wage of Rs1000.
