VAT Amendment Bill Argument in Supreme Court Today
Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Leader and UPFA Parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila, on 06 October, filed the petition against the VAT Amendment Bill stating that it was unconstitutional and needed a two thirds majority in Parliament and a referendum to be approved in its present form.
Apart from Gammanpila, UPFA MPs Bandula Gunawardena and Sisira Jayakody also filed similar Special Determination Petitions against the VAT Amendment Bill on 07 October.
The Special Determination Petition filed by Udaya Gammanpila, against the VAT Amendment Bill presented in Parliament and placed on the Order Paper on 04 October, is to be taken for argument in the Supreme Court today.
Furthermore, through the petition, he challenged the provisions provided in the Bill to levy taxes on the healthcare and telecommunications sectors. “Clause 18 of the proposed Bill attempts to legalize the unlawful collection of Value Added Tax already collected, he argued.
