Japan Train Passenger Sets Self on Fire

Two people are dead after a man allegedly set himself on fire aboard a Shinkansen bullet train in Japan on Tuesday.

Officials said the passenger appeared to douse himself in oil in the first carriage of a train traveling from Tokyo to Osaka, a Japan Rail spokesman told media.

The man who appeared to self-immolate has reportedly died, according to national broadcaster NHK. Passengers reportedly heard an explosion in the same car’s bathroom, near where a female passenger was found before she died of heart failure, NHK reports.

Two people had suffered cardiac arrests during the incident, according to the Odawara fire department. The train was halted and passengers were seen evacuating a smoke-filled carriage. About 20 passengers were being treated for smoke inhalation.
