World’s tallest Christmas Tree complete: Opening at 7 Tonight

The world’s tallest Christmas Tree, a privately-funded initiative by Ports and Shipping Minister Arjuna Ranatunga, is complete and ready for unveiling at a ceremony at 7 p.m today.
There were fears the tree would not be ready on time, after construction was halted following a comment by the Archbishop of Colombo that the tree was a ‘wasteful expenditure’.
On Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe intervention, construction work on the tree resumed with volunteers scrambling to finish in time.
The world’s tallest Christmas Tree was scheduled to be complete on December 20.
Reports say that while the tree did not achieve the targeted height of 100 metres, it has still surpassed the records set by other countries, to become the ‘world’s largest Christmas Tree’.
