Delay Tactics Adopted By the Government in Holding LG Election – Dullas

In a press conference held   by the Joint Opposition in Borella  N.M. Perera hall  yesterday,   Member of Parliament Dullas Alahapperuma accused the Government of   breaking the promises  given to  hold Local Government Election  seven times . He went on to the state , that the Joint Opposition had earlier pointed out  10 days before ,  that  the Minister in charge  may go abroad  and in such a situation,    he should make acting arrangement to receive delimitation report .  Delimitation report was to be handed over  to the Minister yesterday, but  he was abroad . By going abroad Minister can  avoid acceptance of the report.  News  report said,   as  Tamil version of the report in respect of  Jaffna , Killinochchi and Vavuniya districts  were not completed , subject Ministry Secretary did not accept this report.  But we received information that Tamil translation  was completed  day before yesterday night.  Further,  PM office issued a  statement to the effect  that the delimitation committee had requested allocation  of time  to submit the report  o the Prime Minister.  We understand  no such  request was made by the  delimitation committee.  Further,  there is no provision in law to hand over the report to the Prime Minister.
Minister Faizer Mustafa said earlier,  that once  he received the report within two days  it would be gazetted . Hence,  JO  expects   amended report to  be gazetted very soon.  The Government is trying to  send the report to the political parties on receipt of it  and delay the Local Government Election. There is no need  to send it to the political parties because representatives of political parties were included in the committee . Once it is gazetted official position  is  the responsibility   of conducting the election goes to the independence commission . Hence,   we request  the  independence  election  commission to conduct LG election  without  further delay.
Note: Report just received states ,   that the delimitation  report will be submitted  to the  State Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government,Priyankara Jayaratne today.
