Despite Drought No Food Shortage Till Next May
Participating at a radio programme the Additional Secretary of the Agricultural Ministry Vijitha Piyathilleka said, that a suitable methodology will be executed in the near future to distribute fertilizer subsidy of Rs 6.61 billion allocated as fertilizer subsidy and the funds have been credited to accounts of seven hundred thousand four hundred and seventy one farmers.
A net work of Agrarian services centers will be set up for this purpose. When inquired about the 180 thousand hectares of land that cannot be cultivated due to the drought the deputy director of the agricultural ministry J.R.Sudasinghe said there will be no scarcity of any food item till the month of May. A harvest of one million metric tons of rice is expected from the Maha season.
